Welcome Mark Hastings!

It’s the beginning of a new year at Camp Neyati!  Our hope and prayer is that 2016 will be another successful year filled with singing, Bible studies, devotions, prayers and most of all helping our young people form a closer relationship with God.

After 30+ years of working and serving at camp Neyati, Harvey and Tina made the decision to retire at the end of 2015.  They have worked tirelessly for many years to provide a beautiful and safe environment that has given thousands of campers the opportunity to grow closer as a church family and to grow in their spiritual lives.  Harvey and Tina may not be present at camp, but their influence will continue for years to come.  They both truly have the heart of a servant!  Tina will continue to work at the elementary school and Harvey said he would find a part time job to keep him busy.  We wish them all the best!

“You have big shoes to fill!”  I have heard this statement many times over the past few months.  I “shadowed” Harvey from the middle of August to the last retreat in November of 2015.  He introduced me to many people in Guntersville and the surrounding area and almost every person would make the same statement, “You have big shoes to fill.”  I realized early on the weight of the responsibility of being the camp director at Neyati.  My prayer is that my wife Rachel and I can be the kind of servants that Harvey and Tina were to each camper.

I grew up in Huntsville, AL and attended the East Huntsville church of Christ.  Rachel grew up in several locations but spent most of her time in Toney, AL where he dad, the late Bobby Norris, was the preacher for 10 years at Friendship church of Christ.  Her family eventually moved to Albertville, Al.  We met while attending Auburn University and were married in 2001.  We currently live in Albertville, AL and have two children, Hannah (9) and Ben (7).   I am currently preaching at the Hebron church of Christ in Grant and Rachel works with young children with special needs throughout Marshall County.  We are so excited to be a part of camp Neyati.   We ask that everyone be patient with us as we try to make this transition as smooth as possible.  I know there will be many challenges but I also know that the blessings will outnumber any challenge we may face. We are so thankful and blessed to be working at Camp Neyati.  We are looking forward to a great year in 2016!

In His service,

Mark Hastings

Fall, 2014

We had a very busy summer camp season in 2014 and are looking forward to the fall retreat season.  So far this year, we have had about 1700 campers and staff and have had 18 baptisms.  Retreats are scheduled until the weekend before Thanksgiving and will begin again in February of 2015.

In facility news, cabin two is in the process of renovation.  We have removed the old paint and the 64 year old electrical components.  The painting is nearly completed and work on the new electrical is about to begin.  The renovated cabin will only sleep 18 instead of 22.  During the renovation, we uncovered an old coal burning fireplace.  I knew there was a fireplace in the cabin but it had been covered up for many years.  When we removed the paint, we uncovered what look like to be concrete bricks which were probably cast on site in 1950.  I have been trying to find hardware to fit the old casement windows but the replacement is too light duty to handle the steel windows.  We thought about replacing the mattresses but they are over $100 each so that must wait.

The young lady who worked as our lifeguard this summer was involved in a very severe wreck on her way to work here at camp and has spent a good deal of time at the Spain Rehabilitation center.

Quite a storm passed through Camp Ney A Ti yesterday.  I drove down to the camp ground expecting to find trees all over the place but they were all upright, even the two in front of cabin 1 that have leaned for years were still leaning.

We are preparing for the seventh retreat of the season and looking at the calendar, there are no available weekends left for the spring.  Because of the June calendar, we will be ending summer sessions a week early this year unless some group decides to take the last week in July.  There are still five weekends available in the fall.

Benefit Dinner

The benefit dinner at West Huntsville was very good. We had a smaller crowd than last year but it still raised about $2000.00. Please keep Ney-a-ti in your prayers. People often only think about camp while they are there. If you love camp and want to see it continue, pray for camp, donate to camp, come out and help on work days, and do projects with your group when you come to camp. There is so much to do and Harvey or one of the board members can let you know how to help. If you would like to start contributing on a regular basis you can sign up on the Fundraising tab for automatic bank draft. Thank you for your continued support.

First Day of Retirement

This will be interesting, Tina went off to work at Cherokee
Elementary School today and I stayed home.
Some people take a picture of the sun rising on their first day of retirement but I folded clothes and wrote on a blog, another first for me.

The day will be full, Collins Auto parts is delivering a lawn mower to replace the faithful TORO which finally bit the dust.  John Deere has a wonderful program for non-profits, selling equipment at cost with no interest charge for one year.  I will also get the lodge ready for the retreat from the Rogersville Church of Christ arriving on Friday.
